Can “Rancho” really exist

February 22, 2011

On a personal note, I have watched 3 idiots atleast a dozen of times, and am always ready to give it one more shot 🙂

The movie gives me a great feel on how an innovator thinks differently from the world, how the quest for knowledge and its application drives him to do things which other (like me) dream of doing.

I love the quote when Farhan says,

Today my respect for that idiot shot up. Most of us went to college just for a degree. No degree meant no plum job, no pretty wife, no credit card, no social status. But none of this mattered to him, he was in college for the joy of learning, he never cared if he was first or last.

After watching the movie I have always questioned myself, can “Rancho” really exist, can there be someone who can be innovative, can someone break social barriers and do something he loves with such great passion.

And as I was reading yesterday I came across the real life Rancho, Arvind Thiagrajan, the inventor with 42 patents on his name at the young age of 30. He is no professor, he is no R&D specialist at a leading MNC, but guess what he is an “inventor”.

Interested in science and technology from when he was a child, the scientific temper in him got a boost with Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, the then scientific advisor to the Government of India, presenting him with the Junior Scientist Award in 2001.

From then on, Dr Kalam has been his mentor and advisor. It was the former President who urged him to invent and also patent his inventions.

The most trail blazing invention he has is HDFonoDoc, the first device of its kind in the world that can analyse and document heart murmurs in real time.

The amzing part of the journey of Mr. Thiagrajan has been the scientific temper and the willingness to invent even if the conditions have been averse. As you read more about the Innovation hero in the links that I would provide you, the facts that I want you guys to notice are the humbleness, the quest for knowledge and the hunger to create a bigger tomorrow.

As you read you’ll realize that he is no different than you, he had no great advantages that you don’t, he isn’t an Einstien either. What he is, is what you call an innovator, a person who asks why and if there is an answer, he makes sure he finds it.

I’ll leave you guys with the amazing quote of three idiots which always drives the passion for innovation in me,

बाबा रणछोड़ दास सही कहते थे...बच्चा काबिल बनो काबिल..कामयाबी तो साली झक मार के पीछे आयेगी

There are of course many Ranchos in the country. Not all of them patent their innovations. Many are simple day to day innovations which amazes one at times at the levels of simplicity in thinking. Highly probable that such Ranchos are not highly educated….our education system just didn’t get the chance to condition them!
